And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him. THE LAST WORDS OF MARY (John 2:1-5) And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine [Gk: lacked wine], the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. 1. (Hosea 6:1-3) Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up. After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up [the first resurrection, the rapture], and we shall live in his sight. Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth. [“in the third day” there shall be a marriage of the Lamb of God and His Bride] a. (2 Pet 3:8) But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 2. Commentary: “the mother of Jesus was there.” Mary was in a position of authority at the marriage for she not only looked after the festive provisions but more to the point we also learn that she gave orders to the servants. And “Jesus was called, and his disciples [us], to the marriage. And when they wanted wine,” rather than appeal to any other authority member of the families of the bride or groom, Mary appealed from her position of authority upward to Jesus who, as the eldest son, held direct authority over His family. From this collective circumstantial evidence we may conclude that the marriage involved a relative of Jesus, perhaps a half-sister, or a half-brother. Additionally, from the higher understanding of “the Bride of Christ” perspective, Jesus held authority on behalf of both the bride’s family (us) and the groom’s family (God the Father and God the Holy Spirit), and therefore Mary’s appeal to Jesus was perfectly reasonable and consistent. a. Mary = Gk: of Heb. or.; Maria or Mariam /// Heb: rebellious /// bitterness, i.e. (fig.) rebellion; concr. bitter, or rebellious:--bitter, (most) rebel (-ion, -lious). [Mary represents all humanity, and we see in the contrast of her name and her character a profoundly changed “new creature” (2 Cor 5:17) in Christ Jesus] b. (Mark 6:3) Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. 3. Commentary: The phrase “They have no wine” symbolically speaks to the lack of the Holy Spirit. They had already had wine which represented “the earnest of the Spirit” (2 Cor 1:22; 5:5), and now they wanted the “fullness” of the Spirit, which they were about to prophetically receive at this wonderful marriage. The Old Testament had not yet been superceded by “a better testament” (Heb: 7:22), “a better covenant” (Heb 8:6), and the Old Testament Word of God was still symbolized by “the washing of water by the word” (Eph 5:26), i.e., John the Baptist’s water ministry of “repentance.” a. wine = Heb: yayin; to effervesce; wine (as fermented); by impl. intoxication:--banqueting, wine, wine-bibber. b. dove = Heb: yayin; to effervesce; wine (as fermented); by impl. intoxication:--banqueting, wine, wine-bibber. c. (Mat 3:11) I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance [Gk: to think differently; reconsider]: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost [the Dove, i.e., the Wine], and with fire: d. (Luke 24:45-47) Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day [as will we]: And that repentance [the Old Testament] and remission of sins [the New Testament] should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 4. Commentary: Jesus addressed Mary as “Woman” rather than as mother, thereby distancing Himself from her and absolving Himself from submission to any further authority over Him by His mother. For 30 years Jesus, as the Son of man, had been submissive to Joseph (presumably deceased at this moment) and His mother Mary; henceforth, He was to commence acting as the Son of God. a. (Luke 2:51) And he [at twelve years of age] went down with them [Joseph and Mary] [from “hearing” and “asking” the doctors in the temple, but not specifically “teaching”], and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. 5. Commentary: “mine hour is not yet come.” This statement is a reference to the hour in which He should die and be glorified on the cross, and it is His response to “They have no wine” for the true Wine of the Word, the Holy Spirit, could not come unto them until Jesus had been glorified. a. (John 12:23) And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. b. (John 16:7) Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient [Gk: to your advantage: profitable] for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter [Gk: an intercessor, consoler:--advocate] [the Wine of the Word] will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. c. (John 17:1) These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: 6. Commentary: “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it” is a timeless command from Mary who, significantly, is the last generation of the Old Testament; this is a command imparted to YOU who have ears to hear. These are the last spoken words of Mary in the Bible, and as such, they serve as the sum-total culmination and apex of her existence, and a fitting epitaph figuratively etched in stone by the finger of God upon her tomb. In these words, Mary with great singularity of mind unmistakably commands our obedience and total submission to the Son of God, as we see Him manifested in the New Testament. Could the Old Testament have spoken, and it did through Mary, it would have left us with this last grand imperative injunction: “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.” Amen Click here, or on the diagram for a printable (PDF) version!
