(John 15:1-3) I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman [farmer]. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it [to cleanse, i.e. (spec.) to prune], that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. (Mat 20:2-7) And when he had agreed [covenanted] with the labourers for a penny a day [a denarius; one day’s labor], he sent them into his vineyard. And he went out about the third hour [9am], and saw others standing idle in the marketplace [town-square], And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right [righteous] I will give you. And they went their way. Again he went out about the sixth [noon] and ninth hour [3pm], and did likewise. And about the eleventh hour [5pm] he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. CALLING THE LABOURERS FOR THEIR REWARD (Mat 20:8) So when even [evening: the time of rest] was come, the lord of the vineyard [Jesus Christ] saith unto his steward [domestic manager, the Holy Spirit], Call the labourers, and give them their hire [pay for service (reward)], beginning from the last unto the first. (Mat 20:9-16) And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. And when they had received it, they murmured [grumbled (protested, complained)] against the goodman of the house, Saying, These last have wrought [worked] but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree [covenant] with me for a penny? Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen [i.e. this “Friend” was called, but not chosen. Chosen for what?]. 1. (Rev 21:8) But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (Mat 20:17) And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart [apart from whom?] in the way, and said unto them, 1. Commentary: A possible explanation: Jesus “took the twelve disciples” whom He had chosen and separated them “apart” from the many other saved men, wives, and children in the entourage that followed Him. Many sheep are called, but few shepherds are chosen. All the called and chosen receive “the measure of faith,” but not everyone receives the same measure of the “gift” of faith (Gk: belief). a. (Rom 12:3) For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith [Gk: belief]. b. (1 Cor 12:7-11) But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith [Gk: belief] by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. c. (Mat 17:20) And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith [Gk: belief (power)] as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. d.
