(John 1:2) The same was in the beginning with God. 1. The Nelson Study Bible: Genesis 1:1 starts with the moment of creation and moves forward to the creation of humanity. John 1:1 starts with creation and contemplates eternity past. 2. (John 1:14) And the Word [logos] was made flesh, and dwelt among us [Jesus Christ], (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. (Gen 1:1,2) In the beginning God created [to fashion anew (The Nelson Study Bible)] the heaven and the earth [i.e. mixed together; like the fallen angels in the pre-Adamic world]. (Gen 1:2) And the earth was without form, and void [a type of Hell]; and darkness [like a thick black mask] was upon the face of the deep [an abyss (as a surging mass of water)]. And the Spirit of God [the Holy Spirit] moved upon the face of the waters. 1. The Nelson Study Bible: John 1:1 speaks of a time that predates Gen 1:1 but no information is given here on what happened before this time. It is possible that the rise, rebellion, and judgment of Satan transpired before these events. 2. without form = Heb: tohuw; to lie waste; a desolation (of surface), i.e. desert; fig. a worthless thing; adv. in vain:--confusion, empty place, without form, nothing, (thing of) nought, vain, vanity, waste, wilderness. 3. void = Heb: bohuw; (to be empty); a vacuity, i.e. (superficially) an undistinguishable ruin:--emptiness, void. 4. darkness = the dark; hence (lit.) darkness; fig. misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness:--dark (-ness), night, obscurity /// to be dark (as withholding light); transit. to darken:--be black, be (make) dark, darken, cause darkness, be dim, hide. 5. The phrase “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep” alltogether describes something that is anthropomorphic (manlike) and utterly godless. This phrase is the most precise description of Hell in the Bible; synonym, “chaos.” And this phrase is also the most prescise description of unsaved men in the Bible. What does that suggest to you? 6. anthropomorphic = Dict: ascribing human form or attributes to beings or things not human. 7. chaos = Dict: 1. utter confusion or disorder wholly without organization or order; a confused mixture. 2. the infinity of space or formless matter supposed to have preceded the existence of the ordered universe. 3. a chasm or abyss. 8. (Isa 45:18) For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed [vs. “without form”] the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain [tohuw], he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else. 9. (Jer 4:23-27) I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light. I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly [anthropomorphism]. I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled. I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was [had become] a wilderness, and all the cities [but “no man”] thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and by his fierce anger. For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be desolate [devastation; fig. astonishment:--(laid, X most) desolate (-ion), waste]; yet will I not make a full end. [see also 2 Pet 3:5-7] OUR DIVISION: THE FIRST DIVISION IS LIGHT FROM DARKNESS, GOOD FROM EVIL, HEAVEN FROM HELL: SAVED MEN (children of Light) FROM UNSAVED MEN (children of darkness) (Gen 1:3-5) And God said, Let there be light [Jesus Christ]: and there was light [a type of new birth, but light was still mixed with darkness]. And God saw the light [first definite article applied to light], that it was good [towb; “Tob” Judg 11:3, a type of Heaven]: and God divided [separated: divided (asunder), severed (out), X utterly] the light from the darkness [i.e. the “definite” separation of Heaven from Hell]. And God called the light Day [proper name capitalized – very definite], and the darkness he called Night [proper name capitalized – very definite]. And the evening and the morning were the first day. 1. light = illumination or luminary (in every sense, including lightning, happiness, etc.):--bright, clear, + day, light (-ning), morning, sun. 2. (John 8:12) Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world [kosmos; cosmos, the universe]: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. 3. (Rev 21:23) And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof [i.e. no darkness at all]. 4. good = [the most precise description of Heaven in the Bible] Heb: good (as an adj.) in the widest sense; used likewise as a noun, both in the masc. and the fem., the sing. and the plur. (good, a good or good thing, a good man or woman; the good, goods or good things, good men or women), also as an adv. (well):--beautiful, best, better, bountiful, cheerful, at ease, X fair (word), (be in) favour, fine, glad, good (deed, -lier, liest, -ly, -ness, -s), graciously, joyful, kindly, kindness, liketh (best), loving, merry, X most, pleasant, + pleaseth, pleasure, precious, prosperity, ready, sweet, wealth, welfare, (be) well ([-favoured]). 5. (Judg 11:3) Then Jephthah fled from his brethren [a type of us fleeing from unequally yoked men], and dwelt in the land of Tob [good]: and there were gathered [to pick up (raptured): gleaned (from the corners)] vain men [empty worthless men, men “without form, and void” (Gen 1:2) who have been “transformed” (Rom 12:2) by the Light of God] to Jephthah [Jesus Christ], and went out with him [to war with the enemy, a type of evangelizing, preaching the word of God from the corners]. 6. Day = to be hot; a day (as the warm hours). 7. Night = Heb: a twist (away of the light), i.e. night; fig. adversity. 8. (Judg 11:2) And Gilead's wife [Israel] bare him sons; and his wife's sons [half-brothers to Jephthah (Jesus Christ): a type of mankind, born of the flesh but not of the Spirit] grew up [to twist (twisted)], and they thrust out [adversity] Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou art the son of a strange woman. 9. (1 Th 5:5) Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
