And when he was come out of the ship [a type of Heaven], immediately there met him out of the tombs [a type of Hell] a man with an unclean spirit [demons, fallen angels], Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains [i.e. control him with physical force]: Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces [evidence of the presence of supernatural power]: neither could any man tame him [i.e. control him with soft words (domesticate him into obedience)]. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains [of pride: high, manic], and in the tombs [of death: low, depression], crying, and cutting himself with stones [to categorize: this man is a manic-depressive psychotic exhibiting extreme inner mental conflict]. But when he saw Jesus [his salvation: "he shall save his people from their sins” Mat 1:21] afar off, he [THE MAN] ran and worshipped him, And [THE FALLEN ANGELS] cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? [“art thou come hither to torment us before the time?” Mat 8:29] I adjure [charge /// restrain] thee by God, that thou torment me not. For he [had] said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion [a Roman legion consisted of 6,000 men]: for we are many. And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country [“into the deep (abyss: bottomless pit)” Luke 8:31]. 1. tomb = Gk: a remembrance, i.e. cenotaph (place of interment):--grave, sepulchre, tomb /// memory:--remembrance /// recall to mind. 2. Commentary: A tomb is a grave where we put dead things. This man dwelt in the tombs (graves) of his mind. This man’s memories of the unforgiven evil deeds of his past (they were all evil, even the good, because he was not yet saved) were binding him, controlling him like reins of invisible spiritual chains, each memory chain turning him from the Light of God, and binding and drawing him back to its own dark tomb, binding and drawing him toward death, like a hooked fish being drawn out of the water; hence, “Who had his dwelling among the tombs” indicating multiple memories, rather than “in a tomb.” A born-again man’s past is forgiven, covered and sealed by the atoning blood of Jesus Christ, put out of sight and dead, forgotten for all eternity. However, this man’s past was still present in his daily moment to moment thoughts; he was bound to and dwelling with his evil deeds (vs. dwelling with God) in the tombs of his mind - because he was not yet forgiven. a. (Isa 64:6) But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses [i.e. the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil growing inside us] are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf [leaves grow on trees]; and our iniquities [sins], like the wind, have taken us away. 3. Commentary: Did the evil memories themselves emanate those invisible spiritual chains? No. The memories were quite dead, and therefore absolutely powerless. What then? The voices (words) of the fallen angels, the devil (the accuser) living inside the man were what chained and bound the man to his dead memories like a persistent court prosecutor by their unrelenting accusations of his evil deeds. Truly, if the man had had no evil deeds, there could be found no place, no stronghold for the devils to reside within his mind. a. Satan = Gk: the accuser, i.e. the devil:--Satan. b. (John 14:30) Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world [the Devil] cometh, and hath nothing in me. c. (Eph 4:26-28) Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place [a spot, location (position, home); opportunity: room] to the devil. Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. d. (2 Cor 10:3-5) For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal [fleshly], but mighty through God to the pulling down [demolition; fig. extinction:--destruction] of strong holds [(meaning to fortify, through the idea of holding safely); a castle (fig. argument):--stronghold];) Casting down imaginations [thoughts], and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity [a prisoner of war] every thought [fallen angel] to the obedience of Christ; e. Commentary: The evil seed of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (the Lucifer-Satan legacy) is the root of bitterness which grows inside each of us from our conception. The seed of Lucifer-Satan was inherited through our ancestors Adam and Eve who ate the forbidden fruit and thereby internalized the seed of tree of the knowledge good and evil. The internalized tree of the knowledge (without God’s presence and influence) of good and evil is a “high [prideful] thing that exalteth itself [keeps on growing upward filling us with pride] against the knowledge of God.” Thus we are separated from and at enmity with God. The only way for us to enjoy peace with God is to now internalize the seed of the tree of life and thereby become born-again, new creatures in Christ Jesus. f. (John 14:6) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me [for I am the only begotten seed of the Father, full of grace and truth].
