And look that thou make them after their pattern, which was showed thee in the mount [i.e., shown to Moses on Mount Sinai]. THE TABERNACLE (Exo 26:1-3) Moreover thou shalt make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine twined linen [Heb: bleached stuff, i.e. white], and blue, and purple, and scarlet: with cherubims [a kind of angels] of cunning work shalt thou make them. The length of one curtain shall be eight and twenty cubits, and the breadth [width] of one curtain four cubits: and every one of the curtains shall have one measure. The five curtains shall be coupled [Heb: joined] together one to another; and other five curtains shall be coupled one to another. 1. tabernacle = Heb: mishkan, mish-kawn'; a residence (includ. a shepherd's hut, the lair of animals, fig. the grave; also the Temple):--dwelleth, dwelling (place), habitation, tabernacle, tent. 2. KJV = “of cunning work shalt thou make them.” NKJV = “with artistic designs of cherubim you shall weave them.” NIV = “with cherubim worked into them by a skilled craftsman.” 3. Commentary: the four colors stipulated each have a symbolic meaning that relates to Jesus Christ. “Fine twined linen (white)” represents His purity. “Blue” represents heaven. “Purple” represents His royalty and kingship. “Scarlet” represents His blood. However, there are four colors given… for five curtains, so what’s up, there must be a duplicate? What color do you suppose is duplicated? The following verses of Exodus 26:4-6, although not conclusive, should tend to clarify any speculations that we have, and then we can see a wonderfully composite whole. (Exo 26:4-6) And thou shalt make loops of blue upon the edge of the one [end] curtain from the selvedge in the coupling; and likewise shalt thou make in the uttermost edge of another [end] curtain, in the coupling of the second. Fifty loops shalt thou make in the one curtain, and fifty loops shalt thou make in the edge of the curtain that is in the coupling of the second; that the loops may take hold one of another. And thou shalt make fifty taches [“clasps” NKJV, NIV] of gold, and couple the curtains together with the taches [clasps]: and it shall be one tabernacle. THE GOAT’S HAIR COVERING (Exo 26:7-13) And thou shalt make curtains of goats' hair to be a covering [Heb: 'ohel, o'-hel] upon the tabernacle: eleven curtains shalt thou make. The length of one curtain shall be thirty cubits, and the breadth of one curtain four cubits: and the eleven curtains shall be all of one measure. And thou shalt couple five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves, and shalt double the sixth curtain in the forefront of the tabernacle. And thou shalt make fifty loops on the edge of the one curtain that is outmost in the coupling, and fifty loops in the edge of the curtain which coupleth the second. And thou shalt make fifty taches [clasps] of brass, and put the taches into the loops, and couple the tent [Heb: 'ohel, o'-hel] together, that it may be one. And the remnant that remaineth of the curtains of the tent, the half curtain that remaineth, shall hang over the backside of the tabernacle. And a cubit on the one side, and a cubit on the other side of that which remaineth in the length of the curtains of the tent, it shall hang over the sides of the tabernacle on this side and on that side, to cover it. 1. brass = Heb: copper; hence, something made of that metal, i.e. coin, a fetter; fig. base (as compared with gold or silver):--brasen, brass, chain, copper, fetter (of brass), filthiness, steel /// copper:--brass, steel /// (perh. in the sense of ringing, i.e. bell-metal; or from the red color of the throat of a serpent [H5175, as denom.] when hissing); coppery, i.e. (fig.) hard:--of brass. a. (Gen 3:1a) Now the serpent [Heb: 5175] was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. 2. Commentary: Goat’s hair represents sin. (Lev 4:23,24,28; 5:6; 9:3,15; 16:5-10; etc.) Whose sin? Jesus did not sin. He was innocent and perfect. The goat’s hair curtain represents our sin “covering upon the tabernacle” (Exo 26:7) of Him. There are two kinds of sins: the sins of commission (the unrighteous things that we do) and the sins of omission (the righteous things that we don’t do). Christians seem preoccupied with sins of commission and ignore the sins of omission… and the consequences are…. THE SINS OF OMISSION (Mat 25:31-46) When the Son of man shall come in his glory [i.e., His Second Coming], and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand [the sheep], Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand [the goats], Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels (Rev 20:10): For I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. THE COVERING OF RAMS’ SKINS DYED RED, AND THE COVERING OF BADGER’S SKINS (Exo 26:14) And thou shalt make a covering for the tent of rams' skins dyed red, and a covering above of badgers' skins. 1. Commentary: A ram is a mature male sheep. Jesus Christ was the Lamb of God. Although always His “Lamb” in the eyes of Father God, Jesus attained spiritual maturity at about the age of 30, the original age of a Levitical priest entering into holy service, when “the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him” (Luke 3:22) and He was full immersion baptized in the river Jordan. He then became Jesus the Christ, or Jesus Christ. In that sense, He became “the ram” of God, and from that time forward He commenced to manifest the fruit of supernatural miracles. (The ram’s horns – horns symbolize power in the Bible). The covering of “rams’ skins dyed red” represents the atoning blood of Jesus Christ wholly “covering” our sin. The covering of sin in itself is a miracle. 2. Commentary: The covering of badgers’ skins above the rams’ skins dyed red has no definition, i.e., it is an unknown and hence unknowable reference. Presumably, badgers’ skins were a practical application of both waterproofing and unsightliness possessing in themselves no beauty nor attractiveness whatsoever. This is what the eyes of unsaved men and women perceive of the covered (hidden) Tabernacle as they stand outside, not much of anything or of any interest; whereas we who are saved stand inside the Tabernacle “in the secret place of the most High” (Psa 91:1) gazing upward basking in the burning illumination of the golden candlestick, enraptured at the splendor of the fine curtains “of many colours” (Gen 37:3) and the golden cherubim woven throughout. a. (Gen 37:3) Now Israel [Heb: he will rule as God] loved Joseph [Heb: let him add; adding] more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours. b. Commentary: The “coat of many colors” that Israel gave to Joseph, who is the only perfect biblical type and shadow of Jesus Christ, was undoubtedly made of fine twined linen [Heb: bleached stuff, i.e. white], and blue, and purple, and scarlet. THE SINS OF OMISSION
(Mat 25:31-46) When the Son of man shall come in his glory [i.e., His Second Coming], and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. THE COVERING OF RAMS’ SKINS DYED RED,
AND THE COVERING OF BADGER’S SKINS
(Exo 26:14) And thou shalt make a covering for the tent of rams' skins dyed red, and a covering above of badgers' skins.
1. Commentary: A ram is a mature male sheep. Jesus Christ was the Lamb of God. Although always His “Lamb” in the eyes of Father God, Jesus attained spiritual maturity at about the age of 30, the original age of a Levitical priest entering into holy service, when “the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him” (Luke 3:22) and He was full immersion baptized in the river Jordan.
