(Mark 1:16-20)  Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon [Peter] and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men [casting a net of the Word of God into the sea of humanity]. And straightway they forsook their [natural] nets [for natural fish], and followed him. And when he had gone a little farther thence [drawing them in tow (in His net)], he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets [Gk: to complete thoroughly, i.e. repair or adjust:--(make) perfect (-ly join together), prepare, restore] [i.e., in type, mending their doctrines]. And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him [drawn in tow with Simon and Andrew].

1.       (Isa 28:5-13)  In that day [upon our Lord’s Second Coming] shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of his people, And for a spirit of judgment to him that sitteth in judgment, and for strength to them that turn [back] the battle to [at] the gate. But they also have erred through wine [Heb: intoxication], and through strong drink [“beer” NIV] are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink [“beer” NIV], they are swallowed up of wine [Heb: intoxication], they are out of the way through strong drink [“beer” NIV]; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment. For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean. Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

a.       doctrine = Dictionary: 1. a particular principle taught or advocated. 2. that which is taught; teachings collectively. 3. a body or system of teachings relating to a particular subject. (syn: policy, principle, set of guidelines, canon, dogma).

b.       precept = Heb: an injunction:--commandment.

c.       line = Heb: a cord (as connecting) /// to bind together (perh. by twisting).

2.       (Mat 13:47-50)  Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered [Gk: assembled] the good into vessels, but cast the bad [professing Christians] away. So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

3.       Commentary: Likewise, on one level of existence, I too am a fish caught in the net of the Word of God, and Jesus is towing (drawing) me after Him to Heaven; and on another harmonized level of existence, I am become a fisher of men casting a net of the Word of God into the sea of humanity.

TEACHING DOCTRINE BY IMMEDIATE EXAMPLE:
THE NET OF THE WORD OF GOD IN ACTION

(Mark 1:21,22)  And they went into Capernaum; and straightway [Gk: immediately] on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught [fished]. And they were astonished at his doctrine [which was conveyed by the Word of God issuing forth (being cast as a net) from His mouth]: for he taught them as one that had authority [Gk: exousia; power] [being filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus had the authority and power to capture souls and draw the net to shore], and not as the scribes.

1.       (Luke 4:31,32)  And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power [Gk: exousia; authority].

2.       authority = Dictionary: 1. the right to determine, adjudicate, or otherwise settle issues or disputes; the right to control, command, or determine.

3.       power = Dictionary: 1. ability to do or act; capability of doing or effecting something. 2. a particular faculty of body or mind. 3. great or marked ability to do or act; strength; might; force. 4. the possession of control or command over others; dominion; authority; ascendancy or influence.

(Mark 1:23,24)  And there was in their synagogue a man [a type of professing Christian] with an unclean [Gk: impure: foul] spirit [a demon, devil, fallen angel]; and [when “the light of the world” (John 8:12; 9:5) illuminated the synagogue thereby exposing the fallen angel] he cried out, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.

1.       (Luke 4:33,34)  And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil [a fallen angel, i.e., antithetical (syn: adversative, opposing, negative, adverse, hostile) doctrine], and cried out with a loud voice, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.

2.       The Pulpit Commentary: A KNOWLEDGE THAT IS NOT SAVING: Though demons knew and confessed the Son of God, they had nothing to do with him, so that they could truly say, “What have we to do with thee?” Sad thought! These lost ones had nothing to expect at his hand but further, fuller, and final destruction. Alas! That any should know Christ as these evil spirits, acknowledge him, and yet have neither part nor lot in the matter! There is a knowledge that does not save, for it lodges in the head and never touches the heart; it makes itself known by profession, but never manifests itself in practice. There is a faith that only genders fear, but never gains forgiveness nor goes the length of favour; for devils believe and tremble.

(Mark 1:25,26)  And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace [Gk: be muzzled], and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit [fallen angel] had torn him [Gk: (through the idea of spasmodic contraction); to mangle, convulsed], and cried with a loud voice [of rage derived from his frustration], he came out of him [obeyed].

1.       (Luke 4:35)  And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had [contemptuously] thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.

2.       Commentary: Was the man saved or unsaved? Was the exorcism of the fallen angels an act of salvation?

(Mark 1:27,28)  And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits [fallen angels], and they do obey him [for the Words of God issuing forth from His mouth were the Holy Angels empowered by God]. And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.

1.       (Luke 4:36,37)  And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits [fallen angels], and they come out. And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.

Amen
