Herod = Gk: heroic /// a view, i.e. form:--appearance, fashion, shape, sight. 2. [i.e., out of confusion came wisdom] 4. Commentary: The procession of the wise men typified our procession through the Tabernacle. All wise men come to Jesus from the east, out of the land of confusion. Jerusalem represents the courtyard of the Tabernacle, Bethlehem represents the Holy Place, the house represents the Most Holy Place, and the manger represents the Ark of the Covenant. (Mat 2:3-6) When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. (Mat 2:7,8) Then Herod, when he had privily [Gk: privately] called the wise men, inquired of them diligently [Gk: to be exact] what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. (Mat 2:16-18) Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children [Gk: boys] that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel [Heb: ewe, sheep] weeping for her children [who exactly are her children?], and would not be comforted, because they are not. 1. Commentary: Related types and shadows: The first mass slaughter of innocent children inspired by Satan in an attempt to exterminate the seed of Christ was “Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph” (Exo 1:8) and this Pharaoh commanded first the Jewish midwives (unsuccessfully) and then the Egyptians to kill all the male Jewish children as soon they were born. The second mass slaughter of innocent children inspired by Satan in an attempt to exterminate the seed of Christ was Herod’s attempt to kill all the male children of two years old and under. The third mass slaughter of innocent children inspired by Satan in an attempt to exterminate the seed of Christ began in 1973 and was effected through the Supreme Court decision “Roe v. Wade” which legalized abortion of both male and female children before their birth, and this decision continues to murder millions of children today. 2. Commentary: Rachel was the wife of Jacob/Israel. They had two sons, respectively, Joseph (Heb: let him add, adding) and Benjamin (Heb: son of the right hand). Joseph is a type of Jesus Christ and was born of Rachel and Jacob (Heb: trickster, supplanter). Benjamin is a type of us and was born of Rachel and Israel (Heb: prince with God). We who are born-again are symbolically the only sons and daughters of Rachel and Israel. Rachel weeps even now for our never born Christian brothers and sisters who “are not.” (Mat 2:19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.
