DRINK OF THE LIVING WATER

(John 4:1-8) When therefore the Lord [Jesus Christ] knew how the Pharisees [Heb: separatists, exclusively religious] [no interaction with “sinners”] had heard that Jesus [Heb: Jehovah-saved /// (the) self Existent or eternal] made and baptized [Gk: to make whelmed (fully wet)] [i.e., fully immersed] more disciples than John [the Baptist], (Though Jesus himself baptized not [because He is the water of the word of God (John 1:14, the Bible) into which we are baptized (immersed)], but his disciples [baptized],) He left Judaea [Heb: celebrated], and departed again into Galilee [Heb: the heathen circle] [i.e., born in sin, die in sin]. And he must needs go through Samaria [Heb: a watch station] [geographically located between Judaea and Galilee]. Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar [Heb: an intoxicant, intensely alcoholic liquor: strong drink, drunkard] [Dake’s: “falsehood and drunkenness”], near to the parcel of ground that Jacob [Heb: heel-catcher (supplanter)] [a trickster, later renamed, upon his conversion (Gen 32:28), as “Israel” (Heb: he will rule as God)] gave to his son Joseph [Heb: let him add, adding] [a seemingly perfect type and shadow of Jesus Christ]. Now Jacob's well [Gk: (through the idea of gushing plumply); a fount, a source or supply of water: fountain] was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour [about noon]. There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw [Gk: to bale up, (with a bucket, pitcher, etc.)] water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink [i.e., Jesus is quietly but clearly demanding a personal sacrifice from the woman]. (For his disciples [Gk: learners, pupils] [students] were gone away unto the [Samaritan] city to buy meat [Gk: food].)

(John 4:9-12) Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew [Heb: belonging to Judah], askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings [Dake’s: “familiar intercourse or hospitality. Ordinary buying and selling were carried on” v.8] with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God [i.e., the Holy Spirit, like (as evidenced by) Lot who knew (perceived) the two men entering Sodom as Angels], and who it is that saith to thee [i.e., who recognized Me as Holy, as did Lot], Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee [Dake’s: “unfailing and eternal”] living water [1,2]. The woman [not yet understanding; still being naturally minded] saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw [the water] with [Gk: a baling vessel /// bucket, pitcher], and the well [Gk: a hole in the ground, a cistern or well; fig. an abyss (as a prison): pit] is deep [Gk: profound (as going down)]: from whence then [inferring: How then? You certainly can’t reach it with your hands] hast thou that living water? Art thou greater than our father Jacob [Heb: heel-catcher (supplanter)] [vs. Israel], which gave us the well [(herein a type and shadow of the natural world)] [vs. the spiritual world], and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

1.    (Jer 2:11-13) Hath a nation changed [Heb: disposed of: removed] their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people [Heb: fig. flock] have changed [Heb: disposed of: removed] their glory [Heb: weight, fig. splendor or copiousness (syn: abundance, prosperity)] for that which doth not profit [themselves or Me]. Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate [Heb: parched (through drought)], saith the LORD. For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain [Heb: the source of flowing water; fig. happiness, wisdom: well, spring] of living waters, and hewed them out [made for themselves] cisterns [Heb: containers] [the “traditions” (rules, regulations, policies) of men)], broken [flawed, defective, imperfect] cisterns, that can hold no water [a type and shadow of the Holy Spirit of God]

2.    (Jer 17:13) O LORD [Heb: Jehovah], the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed [Heb: become dry], and they that depart from me shall be written [Heb: to grave] [en-graved] in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain [Heb: the source of flowing water; fig. happiness, wisdom: well, spring] of living waters

THE BIBLE IS A WELL OF WATER

(John 4:13-15) Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water [from Jacob’s well (the natural man)] shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him [1] shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him [IN HIM] a well of water [that Jesus Christ (John 1:14) hath dug] springing up into everlasting life. The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

1.    Commentary: “I shall give him” = the water of the Word of God (Eph 5:26); “the water that was made wine” (John 2:9); the logos (seed) water that was converted into rhema (fruit) revelations gushing forth from the well of Jesus Christ, i.e., from the Bible (John 1:14); the water of the word of God transformed into the (intoxicating) wine of the Holy Spirit which was inside Jesus Christ who is the Bible (well) made flesh.

IN THE LAST DAY

(John 7:37-39) In the last day [i.e., the 8th day, symbolizing a new beginning], that great day of the feast [of Tabernacles, the feast of “the fruit of the land” Lev 23:39, i.e., revelations], Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me [the Bible], and drink [Gk: imbibe]. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said [1], out of his belly [“Out from his innermost being” Amplif. Bible] shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; becaus that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

1.    (Joel 2:28-32) And it shall come to pass afterward that [i.e., after the Great Tribulation, then shall begin the thousand years Millennium reign when], I will pour out [the living water of] my [Holy] spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my [Holy] spirit. And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the [very] great [for us] and the [very] terrible [for them] day of [the “great white throne” judgment (Rev 20:11) of] the LORD come [Joel 2:1-3]. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered [Heb: escape, rescued: (be) saved]: for in mount Zion [shepherds] and in Jerusalem [sheep] shall be deliverance [Heb: an escaped portion] [of people], as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant [Heb: survivors] [outliers] whom the LORD shall call.

Amen
