(Matt 14:21) And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.

(Matt 14:22,23) And straightway [Gk: at once, immediately] Jesus constrained [Gk: to necessitate: compelled /// necessary] his disciples [Gk: learners, pupils] [students] to get into a ship [Gk: a vessel] [a spiritual container, i.e., symbolically a church], and to go before him [Gk: to precede: go before] [i.e., go before His second coming] unto the other side [“unto Bethsaida” Mark 6:45; Heb: house of (fishing, fruits, provision, hunting)] [i.e., to the Promised Land, Israel] [“toward Capernaum” John 6:17; Heb: comfort], while he sent the multitudes [the mass of unsaved peoples] away [Gk: fig. to die]. [1,2] And when he had sent the multitudes away [Gk: fig. to die] [this phrase is repeated for emphasis indicating “eternal separation”], he went up into a mountain apart to pray [a type and shadow of His ascension into heaven: Acts 1:8,9]: and when the evening [Gk: nightfall] [“it was now dark” John 6:17] was come, he was there alone.

1.    (Mark 6:45) And straightway he constrained [Gk: to necessitate: compelled /// necessary] his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away [Gk: to free fully, relieved, released, dismissed, fig. let die, divorced] the people.

a.     Commentary: May we note the two different ways Jesus separated the “five thousand men” and perhaps an additional ten thousand women, and children from the considerably fewer disciples [i] who He commanded “to get into the ship”? His servants (under Grace), the few disciples voluntarily (willingly) under His authority whom He cared for (i.e., took care of, supported) were “constrained” while all the other persons who were not His servants (still under Law) “he sent away” to die. These, the multitude who were not His servants Jesus set free, dismissed, divorced, separated from His care and commands.

                                                             i.      Commentary: “considerably fewer disciples” = for example: because of their believing faith and obedience, only Caleb and Joshua, of all the Isaelites who lived at that time, were allowed to enter and live in the Promised Land. (Num 14:30)

2.    (John 12:48) He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words [Gk: rhema] [Grace], hath one that judgeth him: the word [Gk: logos] [Law] that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

a.     (Jer 16:16) Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the LORD, and they shall fish them [with the wooden cross of forgiveness (Grace)]; and after [My second coming] will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them [with the iron sword of judgment (Law)] from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks.

(Matt 14:24,25) But the ship was now in the midst [Gk: middle] of the sea [of Galilee; Heb: circle or circuit] [1], tossed [Gk: tortured: pained, tormented, vexed] with waves [Gk: to swell; billows (as bursting or toppling)] [the swelling waters of humanity]: for the wind [of world opinion] was contrary [Gk: opposite; fig. antagonistic: against] [hostile, a deadly enemy against them] [2]. And in the fourth watch of the night [about 6 am; sunrise, after much darkness] Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea [of humanity, expressing His complete dominance as “Lord of lords, King of kings” Rev 17:14].

1.    Commentary: The “midst” of the sea of Galilee was located about 3 ½ miles into the total 7 miles width of the sea from east to west. In this context, 3 ½ is the symbolic number of the “Great Tribulation, and the number 7 symbolizes “completion.”

2.    (Mark 6:48) And he saw them toiling [Gk: tortured: in pain, tossed, tormented, vexed] in rowing [Gk: to push with oars (against demonic powers)] [rowing against the wind blowing (motivating) the waves] [a]; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them [b].

a.     Commentary: “toiling in rowing” = to the Promised Land; obediently serving, doing inspired works, winning lost souls (spirits) to the Lord and feeding His sheep.

b.    Commentary: Jesus “would have passed by them” = Why? Because Jesus had commanded “constrained” them to go “unto the other side,” to go unto the Promised Land, symbolically to go to Heaven, and for the achievement (fulfillment) of that command, Jesus empowered them to safely arrive, knowing that His command was also accompanied (delivered) with the power to achieve. [i]

                                                             i.      (1 Cor 10:13) There hath no temptation [testing] taken [Gk: gotten hold of] you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer [Gk: permit] you to be tempted [Gk: tested, enticed] [by Lucifer-Satan and his demons, unclean spirits, fallen angels] above that [more than] ye are able [to resist]; but will with the temptation [testing] also make a way to escape [Jesus Christ: John 1:14: the Bible], that ye may be able to bear [Gk: undergo hardship: endure] it.

(Matt 14:26-30) And when the disciples [Gk: learners, pupils] [students] saw him [through their natural eyes] walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a [(unrecognizable)] spirit [Gk: a spectre] [Dict: 1. a ghost, apprarition. 2. any object of fear or dread]; and they [having little faith] cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water [so said because Peter had learned that the command of Jesus held and conferred the power of accomplishment, triumph, success]. And he [Jesus] said, Come. And when Peter was come down [connoting diminished pride] out of the ship, he walked on the water [Peter literally did a miracle], to go to [i.e., he focused upon] Jesus. But when he saw [when he was distracted by fear and “the cares... of this life” (Gk: distractions) Luke 8:14] the wind boisterous [Gk: strong, powerful, rowdy, unruly] [(a mental assessment)] [Peter took his eyes (focus) off Jesus, off a world of order and peace, harmony, and love, and instead focused his eyes upon the storm of the world, chaos and death], he was afraid; and [having lost his focus on Jesus, the Bible, he was] beginning to sink [Gk: to plunge down, submerge: drown] [into the world of chaos and death], he cried, saying, Lord, save me [Gk: protect (me): preserve (me), heal (me), make (me) whole]. [1]

1.    (Matt 24:21,22) For then shall be great tribulation [Gk: pressure (to conform): affliction, anguish, burdens, persecution, troubles], such as was not since the beginning of the world [Gk: kosmos; “cosmos”] [universe] to this time [worldwide thermo-nuclear warfare], no, nor ever shall be [again]. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's [Gk: selected: chosen] sake those days shall be shortened.

HOW THE DAYS SHALL BE SHORTENED (WITH A FIERY MIRACLE)

(Matt 14:31-33) And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand [Gk: power] [ref. the power of The Hand Ministry: apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, teacher: Eph 4:11], and caught him [a type and shadow of the rapture] [1], and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt [Gk: waver]? And when they [Peter and Jesus] were come into the ship, the wind ceased. Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. [2]

(1   1 Thes 4:17) Then we which are alive and remain [“the multitudes” of Matt 14:22,23 having been sent away, to die] shall be caught up together with them [“the dead in Christ” 1 Thes 4:16] in the clouds [of thermo-nuclear warfare], to meet the Lord in the air [“For our God is a consuming fire” Heb: 12:29; He and We are fire]: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

(1   (John 6:21) Then they willingly received him into the ship [i.e., His second coming “in flaming fire… in his saints… in you” 2 Thes 1:7-12, “in us” Rom 8:18,19 & Judg 7:20]: and immediately [Gk: at once: straightway] the ship was at the land [arrived at the Promised Land of Heaven] whither they went. [i] [another concept of the rapture]

                                                             i.      Commentary: “immediately” = the ship instantly miraculously crossed the remaining 3 ½ miles from “the midst” (Gk: middle) of the 7 miles wide sea of Galilee to the shore of the Promised Land, i.e., Heaven.
