(Mark 4:13) And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how
then will ye know all parables?
MATTHEW’S GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
(Matt 13:18-23) Hear ye [Gk: hear and understand] therefore the parable
[Gk: similitude, (symbolically) a fictitious narrative of common life
conveying a moral] of the sower [Gk: to scatter, sow seed] [i.e., the
farmer]. When any one heareth the word [Gk: logos] [“The seed is the
word (Gk logos) of God” (Luke 8:11)] of the kingdom, and understandeth
[Gk: comprehends, acts piously: considers] it not, then cometh the
wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart [Gk:
mind]. This is he which received seed by the way side [Gk: road] [i.e.,
an unsaved person]. But he that received the seed into stony places
[Gk: rocky (places)] [i.e., an unsaved person], the same is he that
heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root
[“the root of Jesse” Isa 11:10; Rom 15:12] [1] in himself, but dureth
[endures] for a while [“but is temporary” Amplif.]: for when
tribulation [Gk: pressure: affliction, trouble] or persecution ariseth
because of the word, by and by he is offended [Gk: entrapped, tripped
up, enticed to sin]. He also that received seed among the thorns [i.e.,
a saved servant] [2] is he that heareth the word; and the care [Gk:
distractions] of this world [Gk: aion], and the deceitfulness [Gk:
delusions] of riches, choke [Gk: to strangle completely, drown, crowd
/// throttle] the word, and he becometh unfruitful [Gk: barren: without
fruit]. But he that received seed into the good ground [of his mind]
[i.e., a saved friend] is he that heareth the word, and understandeth
it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold
[“a hundred times as much as was sown” Amlif.], some sixty, some
thirty.
1. (Rev 22:16) I Jesus have sent mine angel
[messenger] to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the
root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
2. (John 15:15) Henceforth I call you not servants;
for the servant knoweth [Gk: understdands] not what his lord doeth: but
I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my
Father I have made known [Gk: understood] unto you.
MARK’S GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
(Mark 4:10-20) And when he was alone, they that were about him with the
twelve [disciples] asked of him the parable. And he said unto them,
Unto you it is given to know the mystery [Gk: secret] of the kingdom of
God: but unto them that are without [outside our circle], all these
things are done in parables: That seeing they may see, and not
perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any
time they should be converted [Gk: revert: come again, turn about
again], and their sins [“their wilful rejection of the truth” Amplif.]
should be forgiven them. And he said unto them, Know ye not this
parable? and how then will ye know all parables? The sower [farmer]
soweth the word. And these are they by the way side [i.e., an unsaved
person], where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh
immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts
[Gk: minds]. And these are they likewise [i.e., to suffer the same fate
as “the way side”] which are sown on stony ground [i.e., an unsaved
person]; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it
with gladness; And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a
time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's
sake, immediately they are offended [“become displeased, indignant,
resentful, and they stumble and fall away” Amplif.]. And these are they
which are sown among thorns [i.e., a saved servant]; such as hear the
word, And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and
the lusts [Gk: longing (espec. for that which is forbidden): desire ///
to set the heart upon] of other things entering in [illegally, like a
thorn], choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. And these are they
which are sown on good ground [i.e., a saved friend]; such as hear the
word, and receive it [“accept and welcome it” Amplif.], and bring forth
fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.
LUKE’S GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
(Luke 8:11-15) Now the [“meaning of the” Amplif.] parable is this: The
seed is the word of God. Those by the way side [i.e., an unsaved
person] are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the
word out of their hearts [Gk: minds], lest they should believe and be
saved. They on the rock [i.e., an unsaved person] are they, which, when
they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for
a while believe, and in time of temptation [Gk: testing] fall away [Gk:
remove, instigate to revolt, desert: withdraw self] [“withdraw and
stand aloof” Amplif.]. And that which fell among thorns [i.e., a saved
servant] are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are
choked with cares and riches and pleasures [Gk: sensual delights;
desires: lusts] of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection [Gk: to
completion (maturity), to ripen fruit]. But that on the good ground
[i.e., a saved friend] are they, which in an honest and good heart,
having heard the word, keep it [Gk: to hold down (fast): keep in
memory, retain, seize on], and [“steadily” Amplif.] bring forth fruit
with patience [Gk: cheerful (or hopeful) endurance: patient continuance
(waiting)] [1].
1. (Luke 21:19) In your patience possess [Gk: to get,
acquire, (own): obtain, purchase] ye your souls [“you shall win the
true life of your souls” Amplif.].
JOHN’S GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
(John 15:1-8) I am [Jesus Christ] the true vine [Gk: a vine (as coiling
about a support)], and my Father [God] is the husbandman [Gk: a
land-worker, farmer] [“Vinedresser” Amplif.]. Every branch in me [i.e.,
each of us is a branch of Jesus Christ] that beareth not fruit [i.e.,
an unsaved person] he taketh away [“He cuts off” NIV]: and every branch
that beareth fruit [i.e., a saved Saint], he purgeth it [Gk: cleanses,
prunes /// cleans, purifies], that it may bring forth more fruit. Now
ye are clean [Gk: clear, pure] [“already” Amplif., NIV; NAS] through
the word [Gk: logos] [“teachings” Amplif.] which I have spoken unto you
[i.e., through the Bible]. Abide [Gk: dwell] [“remain” NIV] in me, and
I [“will remain” NIV] in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of
itself, except [i.e., but only if] it abide in [is “vitally united to”
Amplif.] the vine; no more can ye [bear fruit], except [unless] ye
abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me
[through study and belief] [1], and I in him, the same bringeth forth
much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me,
he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered [Gk: dessicated,
shriveled away] [for lack of water, Holy Spirit]; and men gather them,
and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me,
and my words [Gk: rhema] [revelations] abide in you, ye shall ask what
ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified,
that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples [Gk: learners,
pupils] [students] [2].
1. (2 Tim 2:15) Study [Gk: to make effort, be
earnest: labour] to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman [Gk:
toiler; fig. teacher: labourer] that needeth not to be ashamed
[embarrassed], rightly dividing [Gk: to make a straight cut (as a
surgeon), to dissect (expound) correctly (the divine message)] the word
[Gk: logos] of truth [from the word of false lies].
2. Commentary: John’s Gospel version of The Sower
Soweth The Word parable agrees with Matthew, Mark, and Luke: (John
15:2) “fruit” = thirtyfold /// (John 15:2) “more fruit” = sixtyfold ///
(John 15:5,8) “much fruit” = an hundredfold.
