I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise. So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just [innocent, holy: righteous] shall live by faith [belief]. 1. Commentary: At the time of this writing to the Romans, Paul was at Cornith probably in the spring of 57 or 58 A.D. Paul had already been preaching for 25 years and hoped to go to Spain with the gospel, visiting the church in Rome on the way and receiving assistance from them as he headed further west. 2. power = Gk: dunamis, doo'-nam-is; force; spec. miraculous power (usually by impl. a miracle itself):--ability, abundance, meaning, might (-ily, -y, -y deed), (worker of) miracle (-s), power, strength, violence, mighty (wonderful) work. 3. salvation = Gk: rescue or safety (phys. or mor.):--deliver, health, salvation, save, saving. (Rom 1:18) For the wrath [anger, indignation, vengeance] of God is revealed [to take off the cover, disclosed] from heaven against all ungodliness [religion, and our relationship to a sovereign God] and unrighteousness [morality, and our relation to our fellowman] of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 1. King James Bible Commentary: Ungodliness has to do with religion, our relation to a sovereign God. Unrighteousness has to do with morality, our relation to our fellow man. Ungodliness is sin against the being of God. Unrighteousness is sin against the will of God. Man is both a religious sinner (he is ungodly) and a moral sinner (he is unrighteous). The unrighteous man lives as if there were no will of God revealed. The ungodly man lives as if there were no God at all. God’s wrath is against both. (Rom 1:19,20) Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath showed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 1. (Psa 19:1-6) To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth [announces, explains: reports, speaks, tells] his handiwork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle [tent] for the sun, Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof. (Rom 1:21-25) Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain [foolish, i.e. (mor.) wicked or (spec.) idolatrous] in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts [a longing (espec. for what is forbidden)] of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. 1. (Gen 6:4,5) There were giants [mutations] in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God [fallen angels, unclean spirits, devils, demons] came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 2. (2 Cor 10:4,5) (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought [fallen angel, unclean spirit, devil, demon] to the obedience of Christ; (Rom 1:26,27) For this cause God gave them up unto vile [disgraceful:--dishonourable, shameful] affections [passions:--(inordinate) affections, lusts] [“shameful lusts” NIV]: for even their women did change the natural use [employment, i.e. (spec.) sexual intercourse (as an occupation of the body)] into that which is against nature [lesbians]: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another [homosexuality]; men with men working that which is unseemly [indecent acts], and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet [“the due penalty for their perversion” NIV]. A REPROBATE MIND (Rom 1:28) And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge [i.e. in their mind], God gave them over to a reprobate [unapproved, rejected; by impl. worthless: castaway] mind [i.e. thoughts], to do those things which are not convenient [not becoming, not fit]; 1. (Rom 1:28 Amplified Bible) And so, since they did not see fit to acknowledge God or approve of Him or consider Him worth the knowing, God gave them over to a base and condemned mind to do things not proper or decent but loathsome. (Rom 1:29) Being filled with all unrighteousness [moral wickedness], fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 1. (Rom 1:29 Amplified Bible) Until they were filled (permeated, and saturated) with every kind of unrighteousness, iniquity, grasping and covetous greed, and malice. They were full of envy and jealousy, murder, strife, deceit and treachery, ill will and cruel ways. They were secret backbiters and gossipers, (Rom 1:30) Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 1. (Rom 1:30 Amplified Bible) Slanderers, hateful to and hating God, full of insolence, arrogance, and boasting; inventors of new forms of evil, disobedient and undutiful to parents. 2. (Exo 20:12) Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. (Rom 1:31) Without understanding, covenantbreakers [treacherous to compacts], without natural affection [hard-hearted towards kindred], implacable [truceless: truce-breaker], unmerciful: 1. (Rom 1:31 Amplified Bible) They were without understanding, conscienceless and faithless, heartless and loveless and merciless. (Rom 1:32) Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them [e.g. drugs, alcohol, pornographic literature and films]. 1. (Rom 1:32 Amplified Bible) Though they are fully aware of God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve to die, they not only do them themselves but approve and applaud others who practice them.
