(Judg 11:1)  Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah. (Judg 11:2)  And Gilead's wife bare him sons; and his wife's sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou art the son of a strange woman. (Judg 11:3)  Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him. (Judg 11:4)  And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel. (Judg 11:5)  And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob: (Judg 11:6) And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.

(Judg 11:1-6)  Now Jephthah [a man of great faith (Heb 11:32), and a type of Jesus Christ] the Gileadite [mound of stones, heap of testimony, heap of witness, rocky region (a type of the cross)] was a mighty man of valour [as was Gideon (Judg 6:12), and Jesus Christ], and he was the son of an harlot [a type of all flesh that had turned from God in Adam]: and Gilead begat [Heb: yalad] Jephthah [a type of the Spirit of God who begat Jesus Christ]. And Gilead's [the man in the flesh] wife bare him [Heb: yalad (the same Hebrew word but rendered differently by the translators, why? rather than “begat”)] sons [half-brothers to Jephthah, born of the flesh but not of the Spirit: unsaved]; and his wife's sons grew up [to twist: proudly (“and the darkness he called Night” (Gen 1:5) Heb: a twist (away of the light)], and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit [occupy: possess] in our father's house; for thou art the son of a strange woman. Then Jephthah fled [(was) chased away, driven away, put to flight (a type of the crucifixion)] from his brethren [his unsaved half-brothers], and dwelt in the land of Tob [good (a type of our Lord’s ascension into Heaven)]: and there were gathered [picked up, gleaned (a type of raptured)] to Jephthah vain men [empty; fig. worthless men; unemployed or bankrupt (a type of men not being “conformed” to this world, but rather men being “transformed” (Rom 12:2) into Heaven, men on the corner or edge of humanity, i.e. a process], and [they] went out with him [with Jesus Christ, raiding the oppressors of Israel, a type of evangelizing, winning lost souls to Christ and taking them away from the world]. And it came to pass in process of time [herein symbolizing about 2000 years: “about two thousand cubits” (Josh 3:4); “(they were about two thousand [swine];) and were choked in the sea [the Holy Spirit]” (Mark 5:13)], that the children of Ammon [in-bred (a type of unsaved nominal Christian denominations, not born-again)] made war [Great Tribulation] against Israel [saved, born-again]. And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war [Great Tribulation] against Israel [2x; exact repetition of a phrase indicates great emphasis], the elders of Gilead went to fetch [receive] Jephthah out of the land of Tob: And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain [military leader (Saviour)], that we may fight [overcome, prevail] with the children of Ammon.

1.       valour = Heb: a force, whether of men, means or other resources; an army, wealth, virtue, valor, strength:--able [“He is able”], activity, (+) army, band of men (soldiers), company, (great) forces, goods, host, might, power, riches, strength, strong, substance, train, (+) valiant (-ly), valour, virtuous (-ly), war, worthy (-ily) /// to twist or whirl (in a circular or spiral manner).

2.       (Phil 3:21)  Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

3.       (2 Tim 1:10-12)  But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

4.       (Heb 2:17,18)  Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation [to atone] for the sins of the people. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted [tested: proven], he is able to succour them that are tempted.

5.       (Heb 7:24,25)  But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

6.       “to twist or whirl (in a circular or spiral manner)” = an action or activity that generates power, a type of the Holy Spirit. First biblical mentions: ”wagons” Gen 45:19; “wheels” 1 Kin 7:30; “whirlwind” 2 Kin 2:1. Wheels are graphically depicted in Isa 5:28; Jer 18:3; 47:3; Ezek 1:15-21; 3:13; 10:2-19; 11:22; 23:24; 26:10; Dan 7:9; Nahum 3:2. There is no mention of “wheels” in the New Testament. Why not? Perhaps because wheels are outside (OT), and now the Holy Spirit is within (NT).

7.       (Dan 7:9)  I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire.

8.       harlot = Heb: [highly fed and therefore wanton]; to commit adultery; fig. to commit idolatry (the Jewish people being regarded as the spouse of Jehovah):--(cause to) commit fornication, X continually, X great, (be an, play the) harlot, whore, (commit, fall to) whoredom, (cause to) go a-whoring, whorish.

9.       thrust out = Heb: to drive out from a possession; espec. to expatriate [Dict: banish] or divorce:--cast up (out), divorced (woman), drive away (forth, out), expel, X surely put away, trouble, thrust out.

10.   strange = Heb: hinder /// to loiter (i.e. be behind); by impl. to procrastinate:--continue, defer, delay, hinder, be late (slack), stay (there), tarry (longer).

11.   Tob = Heb: good /// good in the widest sense; (good, a good or good thing, a good man or woman; the good, goods or good things, good men or women):--beautiful, best, better, bountiful, cheerful, at ease, X fair (word), (be in) favour, fine, glad, good (deed, -lier, liest, -ly, -ness, -s), graciously, joyful, kindly, kindness, liketh (best), loving, merry, X most, pleasant, + pleaseth, pleasure, precious, prosperity, ready, sweet, wealth, welfare, (be) well ([-favoured]). [a type of Heaven]

12.  rapture = Dict: 1. ecstatic joy or delight; joyful ecstasy. 2. an utterance or expression of ecstatic delight. 3. the carrying of a person to another place or sphere of existence. 4. act of carrying off. [a process]

13.   glean = Dict: 1. to gather slowly and laboriously in bits. 2. to gather (grain, etc.) after the reapers or regular gatherers. 3. to collect or gather anything little by little or slowly. 4. to gather what is left by reapers. [a process]

14.   (1 Sam 22:1,2)  David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down thither to him. And every one that was in distress [in a narrow place: confinement], and every one that was in debt [being dunned for debt], and every one that was discontented [bitter: X great, heavy], gathered themselves [assembled themselves] unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.

15.   Ammon = Related to Israel by being one of Lot’s incestuous sons, but related in an unholy sense. Heretofore, the children of Ammon had “vexed and oppressed [tribulation] the children of Israel: eighteen years” (Judg 10:8), but they were now mounting an all-out war of Great Tribulation.
