Amplified Bible: “lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you” = in order that no root of resentment (rancor, bitterness, or hatred) shoots forth and causes trouble and bitter torment. 2. root = Dict: the source or origin of a thing. 3. bitterness = Gk: acridity (espec. poison), lit. or fig:--bitterness. /// (through the idea of piercing); sharp (pungent), i.e. acrid (lit. or fig.):--bitter. 4. springing up = Heb: to germinate or grow (sprout, produce), lit. or fig.:--spring (up). (Gen 2:9) And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. 1. Commentary: The seeds of both the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil are sown into the garden of every one of us, just like they were sown into the garden of Eden (Heb: delight). But since the fall of Adam and the onset of the curse of death, only the natural seed of the tree of knowledge of good and evil has taken root in you and grown into a great tree and flourishes with natural fruit, bringing forth sins, lusts. Whereas the supernatural seed of the tree of life has taken “no root” in you (Mat 13:6; Mark 4:6,17; Luke 8:13) because you are born dead under the curse, stillborn before God, “dead in your sins” (Col 2:13) by your heritage from Adam, spiritually dead to God. However, if your name has been “written in the book of life from the foundation of the world” (Rev 17:8), that seed of the tree of life shall be supernaturally regenerated in you, and it will bring forth the eternal fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22,23). That “quickened” seed of the tree of life in you (Psa 119:50,93; 1 Cor 15:36; Eph 2:1,5; Col 2:13; 1 Pet 3:18) will take root and bear “fruit,” “more fruit,” or “much fruit” for God (John 15:1-8) after you become “born again” (John 3:3,5) by the supernatural application of “water by the word [rhema - revelation]” (Eph 5:26) upon the supernatural seed, which will restore (syn: resurrect, born again) the seed of the tree of life to spiritual life. [Please note that this commentary (opinion) is not perfect, but “closer” to the truth as I perceive it than ever before. Thank you Lord]. 2. (Gal 5:22, 23) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering [patience], gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness [humility], temperance [self-control]: against such there is no law. 3. (Rom 10:17) So then faith cometh by hearing [the supernatural application], and hearing by the word [rhema - revelation] of God.
